The flag pole there also has a small plaque. I had hoped to find my photos I took of it all last year. So far no luck. I'm going in tomorrow and will get a fresh set of images for you and send them to you via email.Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14484843045438246830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499238431580340617.post-13794141426969680832012-07-18T16:34:36.244+12:002012-07-18T16:34:36.244+12:00Is there a World War Two Memorial in Maungaturoto?...Is there a World War Two Memorial in Maungaturoto? I had the Maungaturoto War Memorial Hall in my list, but I realise it is in fact a Centennial Hall. Yes I find it strange as well. Somethin...Hi Stuart

Yes I find it strange as well. Something very unusual about it I agree. I know this is not an official monument as far as The Commonwealth War Graves Commission goes. It's definitely not listed. I'm going to try and establish the facts behind the persons that died after World War 1. My search of the Cenotaph Database has bought results to a point. I'm just wondering if the families etc were actually aware of the criteria at the time the memorial was erected. I would have to approach the Congregational Church in Maungaturoto to see if I can access their minutes concerning the cemetery. I'll get back to you on this once I've been able to find some further information. I think it's possibly that the members of the Congregational Church put it up to commemorate the members that died and returned (only to later die of whatever causes). Somewhere I have a story written by Mr Alan Flower for the Maungaturoto Matters. I'll see if I can locate it again. I think it was written in early 2008 as I recall.

I was checking the HPT Register just out of my own interest. Nothing for Maungaturoto itself is registered at all and we have so many outstanding historic buildings in the township. Guess it's a matter of time before one day we will see them on the register (I Hope!)Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05100812038496671783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499238431580340617.post-79439369909926356682011-06-14T06:50:13.028+12:002011-06-14T06:50:13.028+12:00Liz, it is in my experience quite unusual to have ...Liz, it is in my experience quite unusual to have names of those who died well after the war added to a war memorial. One might think that Cullen who died in 1924 might have died from the effects from the war and thus should be there, but the other three who died in the 1930s seem strange. Is there any indication that they died as a result of their military service? The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has quite detailed criteria and a firm cut-off date to establish eligibility. This is not a CWGC marker, and the decision would have been up to the Maungaturoto
locals to make, but it strikes me as very unusual.

Stuart Park NZ Historic Places TrustStuart Parkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18248933459809283204noreply@blogger.com
